President Macron Calls for Deeper France–Mauritius Cooperation

French President Emmanuel Macron has extended his congratulations and best wishes to Mauritian Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam on the occasion of the 58th anniversary of Mauritius’ independence.

In his message, President Macron also expressed his appreciation for the warm welcome he received during his official visit to Mauritius last November. He said the visit had illustrated the quality of relations between the two countries and reaffirmed the longstanding friendship between France and Mauritius, a relationship built over several centuries around shared values and interests.

The French president also expressed his wish to continue strengthening cooperation between the “sister islands” of Mauritius and La Réunion, highlighting the importance of regional collaboration in the Indian Ocean.

Mr Macron further indicated that France intends to deepen regional cooperation during its presidency of the Indian Ocean Commission, which begins this year. Among the priorities identified are the development of regional maritime security architecture, improved management of natural disaster risks and expanded economic exchanges, particularly in the agricultural sector.

Finally, the French president expressed the hope that Mauritius would participate in the “Africa Forward” summit, which France will co-organise with Kenya on May 11–12. The gathering is expected to bring together public and private stakeholders to strengthen partnerships and economic cooperation across Africa and its international partners.
