He emphasized that in an increasingly interconnected world, the repercussions of corporate decisions are more visible and impactful than ever before.

Good corporate governance demands transparency, accountability, and fairness, principles that directly influence public trust and corporate reputation

Mark Watkinson’s message was clear: “Good corporate governance demands transparency, accountability, and fairness, principles that directly influence public trust and corporate reputation.” This commitment to integrity is not just a regulatory requirement, but a strategic imperative that ensures long-term success and resilience.

As directors and business leaders, the graduates of the Director Development Program are now equipped to navigate these complexities with enhanced skills and knowledge. “It is crucial to recognise that the responsibilities of directors now more than ever extend far beyond the confines of boardrooms and financial statements. This serves as a backdrop, highlighting the importance of directors and business leaders to continuously enhance their skills, knowledge, and competencies,” noted the Chairperson.

The Mauritius Institute of Directors, in collaboration with the Open University of Mauritius, has been instrumental in fostering these competencies. Mark Watkinson praised the graduates for their dedication, acknowledging the rigorous nature of the program. “Your journey through the Director Development Program provides a strong foundation for this ongoing process, preparing you to lead with foresight and responsibility,” he affirmed.

The ceremony was not only a celebration of the graduates’ achievements, but also a call to action for the future. Mark Watkinson encouraged the new directors to lead with integrity and innovation, driving sustainable success in their organizations. “Your participation today not only inspires our graduates, but also symbolizes our shared commitment to excellence in governance. So dear graduates, today, as we acknowledge your achievements, we also look to the future. A future where you lead with integrity, innovation, responsibility, and drive the changes necessary for sustainable success,” he stated.

Mark Watkinson’s own experience as a graduate of a similar program in London allowed him to add a personal touch to his speech. “I myself passed the Director Development Program in London 12 years ago, and I assure you that the massive advantage is to continuing that leadership,” he shared, underscoring the lifelong benefits of ongoing education and professional development.

Congratulating the graduates, the Chairperson reminded them of the profound impact their leadership can have. “As you step forward from today’s celebration into the roles awaiting you, remember the extensive impact your leadership can have. Your decisions as directors have the power to influence not just financial outcomes, but also drive a sustainable future,” he said.

The convocation ceremony was a testament to the MIoD’s commitment to nurturing excellence in corporate governance. The embodiment of what Mark Watkinson meant when he aptly put wished to the graduates, “May you continue to lead with wisdom, courage, and foresight.”
